Hongkong singer Sarena Li passed away yesterday (May 4) after a nine-year battle with cancer. She was 31.

Her good friend, actor Steven Ma, announced the tragic news on her Facebook page, saying that she passed away at 5.10pm and thanked everyone for their care, support and love for Sarena.

1 of 2 Steven and Sarena

In 2012, just two years after Sarena made her debut as a member of Hongkong pop trio Xiao Long Feng, she was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer that commonly develops in the salivary glands or other regions of the head and neck.

Although she was given the all-clear from doctors in 2017, she soon suffered a recurrence, with the cancer spreading to the lungs, liver, kidneys, and bones.

Sarena tried targeted therapy, but had to stop treatment as her body could not withstand the side effects. The cancer spread aggressively, damaging her facial nerves and various organs, and she eventually lost vision in her right eye.

2 of 2 Donations poured in for Sarena

Last September, Sarena filmed a video to appeal for help and raise funds for her medical expenses. Donations poured in and she reached her target in just a few days.

However, despite receiving a new cancer treatment, her condition deteriorated. On May 1, Sarena was in so much pain that she had to go to the hospital for an examination and treatment for pain relief.
