90-year-old man killed in Jurong East bus accident

SINGAPORE — A 90-year-old man was killed in an accident involving an SMRT bus today (Nov 17).

SINGAPORE — A 90-year-old man was killed in an accident involving an SMRT bus today (Nov 17).
 The bus driver has been arrested in relation to the case, the police said.

The police said it received a call today at about 11.58am, informing of an accident along Jurong East Ave 1, towards Toh Guan Road. Upon police arrival, it was established that an accident involving a bus and a pedestrian had occurred at the said location. Police investigations are ongoing.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the incident and dispatched an ambulance to the scene. Upon arrival, paramedics attended to the man and later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Mr Patrick Nathan, Corporate Information and Communications, SMRT Corporation said SMRT is currently cooperating with the traffic police on the investigations

“We have contacted Mr Tan’s family and will render assistance as best as we can during this very difficult time,” said Mr Nathan. “We would like to express our deepest condolences to Mr Tan’s family.”

SMRT preliminary investigations, telematics data and onboard camera footage, showed that the bus had just pulled out of a bus bay and was being driven at around 34kmh at the time of the accident. The accident occurred at a yellow box which Mr Tan was seen crossing. The bus was driven by a 34-year-old Malaysian female Bus Captain.
