Pioneer residents show support for SEA Games

SINGAPORE — More 2,000 residents of Tanjong Pagar GRC and Radin Mas came together to kick off the 28th SEA Games, in support of Singapore athletes — among the 15 constituencies which will do so ahead of the games next month.

Held as part of the People’s Association’s Community Sports Festival, pioneer residents lighted up a replica of the SEA Games torch to symbolise the support of the local community for Team Singapore athletes. The torch was then used to light the community flame — one of 15 that will be lit around Singapore and taken to the SEA Games opening ceremony.

Members of Parliament for the constituencies — labour chief and Minister in Prime Minister’s Office Chan Chun Sing, Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Rajah and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Sam Tan — also joined in a Singapore mass workout and flagged off a 1km walkabout as part of the celebrations today (May 24). 

National sailor Colin Cheng, who is also a resident of Radin Mas, led the residents through the neighbourhood with the SEA Games torch.

Mr Chan, speaking to reporters, said the event was a good opportunity to rally the residents to support their neighbours who are representing Singapore in the SEA Games. 

Four of the SEA Games athletes, including Mr Cheng, are from Radin Mas. Besides Mr Cheng, they are sprinter Poh Seng Song, canoeist Benjamin Low and wushu exponent Lee Tze Yuan.
